Participants at the advanced Champion level had the option this year to report on an innovative enterprise as their Challenge program fulfillment.

An Innovation Project could detail either an internal sustainability measure or a public or client-facing initiative.

More than 250 St. Louis Green Business Challenge participants attended our Award Celebration on January 22, 2016 at the Saint Louis Zoo Lakeside Cafe. The Challenge teams were welcomed by Joe Reagan, President and CEO of the St. Louis Regional Chamber, who highlighted the importance of sustainability in our community’s culture of business innovation. Glenda Abney, Director of Missouri Botanical Garden’s EarthWays Center, and Eric Schneider, Director of Business Solutions for the St. Louis Regional Chamber, also spoke and introduced guest award presenters from Challenge sponsor companies Graybar,Tarlton and Waste Management.

  • 100% of Challenge companies have formed a Green Team to lead sustainability efforts

  • 92% established a corporate sustainability policy
  • 94% provided employees with education toward greening both home and workplace
  • 96% promoted and support alternative transportation for employee commuting
  • 73% have implemented a green purchasing policy
  • 52% use green-certified cleaning products
  • 48% benchmarked and tracking company energy usage to facilitate increased efficiency
  • 40% calculated their company's greenhouse gas or carbon footprint
  • 35 companies participated in activities related to the High Performance Building Initiative
  • 27 companies participated in activities related to the Biodiversity Initiative

The Challenge teams were welcomed by Jason Hall, Vice President - Entrepreneurship and Innovation, St. Louis Regional Chamber. Dr. Jeffrey Bonner, Dana Brown President and CEO of the Saint Louis Zoo, and Bob Herleth, Executive Vice President and COO, Missouri Botanical Garden provided the luncheon addresses regarding sustainability practices of their institutions.

2014 St. Louis Green Business Challenge By the Numbers

  • 84% provide their employees education on how to "green" their home and workplace.
  • 79% have a corporate sustainability policy.
  • 61% use green-certified cleaning products.
  • 53% implemented a green purchasing policy.
  • 45% calculated their company's greenhouse gas or carbon footprint.
  • 41% committed to reduce their energy consumption by 10%.
  • 33% committed to reduce their waste by 25%.
  • 22 companies benchmarked their building's energy consumption.
  • 23 companies completed a biodiversity survey of their property.


Presented by the St. Louis Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Missouri Botanical Garden, the St. Louis Green Business Challenge delivers "triple-bottom" line results (financial, social, and environmental) to companies and organizations across the St. Louis region. The Challenge supports integration of sustainability measures into the kinds of everyday operational practices common to every business - including assisting in the adoption of strategies that can improve financial performance engaging employees and reducing environmental impact of their operations. Since 2010, 150 companies representing more than 125,000 employees, have completed the Challenge.
